  • Windansea Shack by John Durant 2010

    WINDANSEA SHACK PHOTO

John Durant documented daily life around the beaches of San Diego in the 1970's -80's. This shot of the famous Windansea Shack is timeless.

Built in the late 1940's by local surfers who returned fro the war, Woody Ekstrom, Fred Kenyon, and Don Okey created a lasting gathering place that still stands today. The beach Luaus of the 40's and 50's soon gave way to localism during the 60s-90's.

While a peaceful beach, the vibes in the line-up can get stressed. The locals often hold a "tourists Go Home" party at the end of summer, but as a whole, the vibes have improved tremendously over the years. That said, watch your step and respect the locals both young and old.
