I knew who Skip Frye was before I met him in 1986. He was a legend in Pacific Beach and I saw his wings on T-shirts and on the back of cars everywhere.
Skip's been here through all the stages of surfboard design From the birth of the surfboard industry to being the creator of some of the most desirable surfboards on earth today.
Why is he so special and his surfboards worth so much?
Well for starters he never sold out.
Most of the other surfers from his era chose ways to mass produce and license out their names and shapes to overseas manufacturers like Surftech. There is no shame in any of that.
Not many have chosen to do what Skip did. He kept surfing through each decade regardless of the boards in fashion. He kept up with design and never stopped inventing new shapes or coming up with fresh ideas. He has never used a shaping machine or used another shaper to help him finish boards. He just plugged away, day after day hand-shaping every board for the past 60+ years.
