BUTCH VAN ARTSDALEN  

Butch Van Artsdalen is an anti-hero by todays understanding. His reputation was built upon his exploits in La Jolla and on the North Shore of Oahu. Around our local beaches, Butch was well loved as he was a stud on the football field at his LJ High School and in the parking lot at Windansea. 

His exploits of fighting and drinking were legendary. He was a cohort of Skip Frye and Mike Hynson and later was on The Duke Kahanamoku Surf Team with Paul Straub and Joey Cabell.

He was known as the first surfer to master The Pipeline on Oahu and later as one of the greatest North Shore Lifeguards on record, serving at Pipeline and Waimea Bay with the likes of Eddie Aikau. Brawling, drinking, friendship and life saving. Butch remains one of Surfings greatest legends and one of La Jolla's favorite sons.
