John Durant Photography - Skip Frye Shaping Room PB 1977

    SKIP FRYE

After the glory of the 1960s, the 70's were full of change for everyone. Surfboards, politics and the Vietnam War had everyone in a state of flux. Skip was no different. He found himself shaping boards for a few dollars each behind Select Surf Shop. This era he refers to as his "Ghetto Days."

John Durant was getting a new board shaped one summer afternoon and shot off a roll of images. These 50 year old glimpses at a master who had not yet received the mass approval he now enjoys. The struggle was real.
