  • No Kooks- Blacks Beach, 1975 by John Durant

    NO KOOKS

John Durant documented daily life around the beaches of San Diego in the 1970's -80's. One of his go-to spots was Blacks Beach. There were three-ways down to the uncrowded waves, the famous "Goat Trail," the infamous "Ho-chi-min" tail and the paved main road. The road has a city gate that is always locked and only accessible to the lucky few who have access to the key. This photo captures the sign of the times: No Kooks. Localism was at its zenith and those who ventured into spots that they were not locals, well, let's just say, you had to tread lightly.
