Duke Kahanamoku Body Surfing circa 1934
when I started this site, my goal was to offer things that were different, rare or special. With that, I called upon friends and artists that I’ve met over the years to help share their works.
I’ve loved this image since the first time I saw it 20 years ago. Photographer and friend, John Durant, contacted the Bishop Museum on Oahu to inquire about the image.
Here’s the details.
Nat Farberman was still in his twenties when he shot this iconic image of Duke Kahahmoku sometime between 1934 and 1937.
The original image was produced using a hand-held 4X5 inch, press camera by future LIFE Magazine photographer N. R. Farberman who went on to become a travel and fashion photographer for American magazines from the 1930s to the 1970s.
