Skip Frye 8’8” 1968 Vee Bottom From Rusty Preisendorfers collection

Skip Frye Surfboard : 8’8” G&S Vee Bottom 

The significance of this board space in the shortboard revolution cannot be overstated. Before Skip Frye and the Windansea Surf Club went to Australia in 1968, the state-of-the-art was 9’6” noseriders.

After Skip got with McTavish and saw his creation, The Vee Bottom, well, the surf world was turned on its head. Overnight, people were cutting their boards down and chopping tails off. The shortboard revolution was on.

Skip chopped his boards down and his new vee bottom was one of the first to hit the market as a model from G&S. Everyone soon followed suit. Surfers were choosing maneuvers and turning over noseriding. These things were not easy to ride but did have attributes that lead us down the path to better shapes to come.

 All in all, the whole vee bottom craze lasted only 6-7 months before everyone moved onto other designs like the fish, pintail and egg. 

This board is out of Rusty Preisendorfers private collection. He had it fully restored by Joe Roper and had it signed by both Joe and Skip. Rusty shaped at G&S and holds both Joe and Skip in high regard. This board is as soul as it gets.
