Keith Saarloos grew up in Los Angeles County—a world away from the valleys and hills of Los Olivos, California, though only 175 miles to the north. Surfing, skating, punk rock, and football filled his early years.

Today, he runs a successful family vineyard and is truly a jack of all trades. But he’s not just a jack... he’s a king.

Keith has carved out his own piece of the Valley—one of the most photographed valleys in Southern California, maybe even beyond. He owns his ranch, operates his tasting room, tends the vineyards, and still finds time to be a dad, husband, golfer, radio host, cattle rancher, and podcaster.

    The dude is busy.

    From Apple Orchards to Vineyards

In 1999, Keith's father, Larry Saarloos, purchased the Windmill Ranch in Ballard Canyon, originally planted with apple trees. After a failed apple crop, they transitioned to grapevines, planting Syrah and Grenache. A few years later, they acquired El Camino Real Vineyard near the intersection of highways 101 and 154, where they grow numerous varieties, including Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

    A Family Legacy

Saarloos + Sons isn't just a winery—it's a family legacy. The winery's motto, "Honor + Prepare," reflects their commitment to honoring past generations and preparing the way for future ones. Keith works alongside his father, Larry, and his children, Brielle and Cash, who help with harvests and work in the tasting room.

Each wine bottle tells a story, often named after family members. For instance, their Grenache Blanc is named "Mom," and a Cabernet Sauvignon is called "Courage," dedicated to Keith's uncle John, who died in World War II.

    Vineyard Tours and Community Engagement

Keith leads free vineyard tours every Saturday morning at 10 a.m., offering visitors a firsthand look at the family's farming practices and winemaking process. These tours are a testament to his commitment to transparency and community engagement.

Beyond the vineyard, Keith is deeply involved in the Los Olivos community. He serves as the acting mayor, announces local parades and events, and even helps with the town's trash collection.

    A Unique Wine Experience

Saarloos + Sons is known for its unique wine and cupcake pairings, a tradition they've maintained for over 15 years. This unconventional pairing has become a signature experience for visitors, combining the artistry of winemaking with the joy of indulgence.
